After President Rex Bell opened the meeting, Rotarians and guests sang the National Anthem. Sandy Bliesener gave the invocation, and Richard Piet of WKZO gave us a rundown of the day's news.

Songs:

Jerry Albertson and John Dillworth led the Rotary choir through one verse of  "America the Beautiful", and the Kalamazoo version of "Downtown" in honor of the day's program.

Announcements:

- Today is the last day to sign up for Dinners for Eight.  See Giff Blaylock with questions.

- PDG, PP Karl Sandelin announced that all 300 District raffle tickets have been sold!!

- Flu shots will be available next week.

- The District Foundation dinner will be held in Hastings on October 21st.  Register online at http://www.district6360.com/

Program for the Day

Bob Miller introduced Ron Kitchens, President and CEO of Southwest Michigan First.  Ron discussed his latest book, co-authored with Heather Smith, Vice President of Communications at Southwest Michigan First and Dan Gross, chief business columnist for Newsweek.  Entitled Community Capitalism: Lessons from Kalamazoo and Beyond, the book "burdens people with the facts" about why Kalamazoo is such a successful community. He went on to describe the five key elements found in all successful communities: place, capital, infrastructure, talent and education.
