NEW MEMBER: James Stroupe was introduced by sponsor, Brian Kaufman. Dr. Stroupe is a chiropractor, and returned to Kalamazoo recently after being gone 24 years. He and his wife have started a practice here specializing in chronic overuse injuries and post surgical pain. Dr. Stroupe is also a goldsmith and is anxious to reconnect with the arts community here. He and his wife have a one year old daughter.
COMMITTEE REPORTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS Dinner for Eight: Anna Reddy reminded Rotarians of this Family of Rotary Committee activity. Contact Giff Blalock for more information or to sign up. Raffle Tickets: Karl Sandelin announced that there are only 20 raffle tickets left for the District Raffle, and next week is the last opportunity to buy one. Flu Shots - will be available at the October 20 meeting, from 11:30 to 1:30. GSE Team: Barbara Walters appealed to members to help identify candidates for the Group Study Exchange to Buenos Aires, Argentina in April 2009. Deadline for nominations is November 1. Candidates need to be 25-40, non-Rotarians, and in their profession 2 yrs. District 6360 Annual Dinner - October 21 in Hastings. Board Meeting - Wednesday, October 8 at Park Club.
PROGRAM Rotarian Tony McDonnell introduced Paul Spaude, CEO of Borgess Health, which is part of Ascension Health. Spaude's topic was Healthcare Reform, and he made the case for the necessity of overhauling our healthcare system. He presented the principles that guide their plan for reformed healthcare policy:
His call to action was "By 2020, all should have access and coverage." He emphasized that the reform will have to be at the federal level. With many questions and comments following his presentation, President Rex suggested he may want to consider coming back at a later date to continue the discussion of this complex issue.
