Kalamazoo Rotary - June 9, 2008

President Judy Moore called the meeting to order.  Adam Wade gave thanks for our time together to share, learn and grow and particularly for this day.  He added an addendum for Sandy Edwards that she not screw up the piano today.  Richard Piet acknowledged our recent bad weather and that which is still to come.  Thousands are still without power and flood watches prevail.  Hillary ended her campaign and Fred Upton predicted a close Obama/McCain match.  Stacy Ridenour reviewed the big "Art Weekend" and events to come such as the Waterfront Film Festival and the Thomas Jefferson exhibit at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum.

Betty Ongley, Meghan Decker and Cindy Carter were visiting Rotarians.  John Pellowe and Sandy Edwards led in a strong "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and the piano remained operative.

Announcements:  Betty Ongley, District Chair of the Literary Committee, presented an award to Kalamazoo Rotary in recognition of our work in literacy this year.  In addition, the Ladies Library donated $1000 toward these efforts.  Kudos to our committee and everyone who participated.

Jean Forrest, Chair of the Red Rose Committee, announced the 2008 recipient, Ken Miller of the Millennium Group and President of the WMU Board, and the presentation on June 23.  Remember the Family of Rotary's Barn Theatre event and the RSVP deadline of June 30.

Happy Bucks:  President Judy was the honoree of numerous Rotary charity donations both for her wonderful job as our President as well as for her 22 years guiding the Kalamazoo Leadership Program.  Andy Latham's photography efforts were on exhibit at the Art Fair for the first time and he won a blue ribbon for Best in Photography category and he donated the cash award to Rotary Charities.

Program:  Eric Tiller introduced speaker Kevin Kuhn, a co-worker with A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. who came in from St. Louis through some challenging weather.  Kevin is an IT Security Analyst and spoke on protection from "Identity Theft".  Interesting stats include that Michigan is #15 in credit card fraud and people aged 18-49 are the most common victims because:  1.  they are more active shoppers and 2.  they use the internet more.  Identity theft has moved from the physical to virtual.  His rapid-delivery 30-minute program was packed with great advice on how to reduce risk and what to do if you are a victim.
