President Judy Moore called the meeting to order, Michael Brown gave the invocation, and D. Terry Williams gave the Arts News for the week.  After Richard Piet gave the WKZO version of the day's news, John Dillworth and Thell Woods celebrated our wonderful winter weather by leading Rotarians in "In the Good Old Summertime" and "Jingle Bells".

Al Heilman introduced new member Ken Collard, Kalamazoo's City Manager.   A Michigan native whose parents were both educators, he attended schools and worked in a number of municipalities around the state before coming to Kalamazoo.  He and his wife of 35 years live in the Winchell neighborhood and have two sons, two daughters and four grandchildren.  Ken's advice to all young men is to become a grandfather!    Welcome Ken!

President Judy thanked PE Rex Bell for standing in for her last week.

Pam Kingery announced that five books and $445.00 were donated today, and many Rotarians signed up to read for the literacy project "Kalamazoo Literacy; A Story by Rotary".  She then introduced Judy D'Arcangelis, Principal at King-Westwood Elementary School, who spoke briefly about the positive impact that books and reading have on young children, and the particular benefit of giving children books of their own to read.  Judy then introduced three third graders; Kegan Miller, Joe Uekert, and Akedra Guidry, who all spoke about why reading is important and what kind of books they like to read, then read a brief passage from their favorite book.

Portage Rotarian Bob Small will be leading the outgoing Group Study Exchange team that will be heading to the Philippines in a few weeks.  Adam Martin and Andrea Anderson, two of the four team members, spoke briefly about their work and what they hope to achieve through participation with the GSE.  President Judy then appealed to Rotarians to consider being a family host to the incoming GSE team from the Philippines, who will be in Kalamazoo May 3-9.  The team consists of one male leader, two female, and two male members.  Jill Flipse has already volunteered, and the hope is that several others will step up to open their homes to these visitors.

Rotary Ski Day will be Sunday, March 2nd at Timber Ridge.  Rotarians, families and friends are invited at 2pm, and the ticket price ($30 adults, $20 children 8-11, and $5 children under 7) includes pizza and pop at 5:00.  If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Jim Gasaway at 324-0080 by February 28th.

Barb Miller introduced Francis Jewell, managing director of the City of Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation Department.  Because she was not sure what Rotarians would want to know about the Parks & Recreation Department, Francis challenged club members with the following "quiz":

1.   How long has the Parks & Recreation Department been around?  Seven years, prior to that it was known as the Parks and Parking Department.

2.   How many City Parks are there?  32 with facilities, and over 50 total.

3.   Which of the 50 parks was the City's first?  West Main Park dates back to 1851.

4.   Which County Park has been maintained by the City for 150 years?  Bronson Park.

5.   How many municipal pools are there in the City?  One - Kik Pool named after former Parks director Nicholas Kik.

6.   How many years has the framer's market been held at its Bank Street location?  60 years.

Thank you to Francis for providing us with this very informative presentation about parks and recreation in Kalamazoo.
