Editarian:  Robert L. O'Boyle

President Judy started the meeting with a spilled water glass and a silent mike but maintained her usual composure and jocularity as she introduced the Salvation Army Band for the playing and singing of the National Anthem.  Doug Vernon gave the invocation and Dan Gustin followed with the Kalamazoo Arts News.  Rotarian Tom McComb led the singing of "Jingle Bells" accompanied by his Salvation Army Band.  The Rotary Mixed Choir never sounded better.

Four Rotarians were introduced as visitors from the Oshtemo Rotary Club and a number of Rotarians in the audience announced their guests.

Thell Woods introduced our newest Rotarian, Jeff Perry, who gave a short version of his very busy and productive life.  A native of Port Huron, Michigan, Jeff now lives in Kalamazoo with his wife Laura and is a financial advisor with Edward Jones.  Welcome, Jeff.

President Judy thanked Rotarian Tim Light for a significant contribution to Rotary Charities.

Matt Bates reminded everyone that tickets are still available for the WMU vs CMU Basketball game January 22.  The $12 ticket includes a pregame party.  Send Name, # of tickets, and check to Kalamazoo Rotary Club, PO Box 50251, Kalamazoo 49005 or purchase tickets at the meeting on January 7.

President Moore congratulated Salvation Army Bell Ringers chair Jim Holtgrieve and Doug Vernon for filling all the slots for the locations assigned to our club.  Jim Holtgrieve thanked all participating Rotarians and indicated that approximately $4,300 was collected at the buckets.  He indicated that a goal of $12,000 was still achievable and to that end, he initiated the pre-announced passing of the buckets to give Rotarians an opportunity to contribute toward that goal.

President Judy also announced that non-Rotarians can contribute to the Kalamazoo Charities International Clean Water Initiative by sending a check and designating the water filters as the recipient and Kalamazoo Rotary will then issue receipts for the donations.

Correction:  The new board member, "Mary Jo Hughes" is actually Mary Jo Asmus.  Sorry for the confusion.

  • Past President Rick Briscoe paid happy bucks for the success of a Dinner for Eight, and for the CMU BB win over mighty Michigan.
  • Mary Jo Asmus gave for the engagement of her daughter.
  • Jennifer Lang was relieved that for a short time her people plate is empty.
  • Thell Woods celebrated the success of The Wizard of Oz at the Civic.
  • Ed Sackley paid for the wonderful experience of his daughter in Cuba.
  • Dutch Duisterhof paid for the wonderful success of the last Art Hop in Kalamazoo.
  • Dan Busby contributed $20 in recognition of Rotarian William Wood as the author of an award-winning article on the Boy Scouts.
  • Tom McComb paid for the significant effort of the Rotary club and the community in the Salvation Army's annual campaign to support its charities.

Henry Holland introduced a delightful holiday program presented by 15 young men and women of Kalamazoo Christian High School.  You really had to be there to appreciate the quality of the singing by this evenly mixed choir of male and female voices.  The six songs presented were diverse in presentation and style but the music was great and put all in attendance in a great holiday mood.  Thank you Henry and please pass our gratitude and congratulations to conductor Caroline Bertrand and the KCHS for this special program.

Happy Holidays

Remember: There will be no Rotary meetings the next two weeks.
