To celebrate our diversity, Rotarian Dave Koestner shared the Catholic meal blessing as the invocation. Richard Piet of WKZO covered the news of the day including weather comments "Santa may arrive minus snow for Kalamazoo". Elaine Williams announced the January 5th Art hop and other news. Visiting Rotarians: Amy Krone introduced Betty Lee Ongley of Portage and Greg McLogan introduced Dick Weaver of Santa Fe. Guests: Thell Woods introduced Sheriff Mike Anderson; Diether Haenicke introduced his assistant, John Andrews (grooming a new Rotary member); Jane Fette introduced her mother Alma VanHeuvelen and her new husband who she has known for 70 years. Music: In the holiday spirit, John Dillworth and Tim Kilmartin led us in "Joy to the World" and "White Christmas". These we can handle! New Member: Newest club member Jim Casaway transferred from the Portage AM club, where he was a charter member and Past President. He is enthusiastically involved with the Vicksburg Rotary Show. Happy Bucks: Contributions from Jerry Lord for Brett Farve breaking Marino's record; Jeff Clapp for daughter's MA; Diether Haenicke for missing the Ohio State song and the knowledge that no Wolverine collapsed during the same; Greta Williams for son's engagement; Jim Woodruff for 30 minute free parking at the airport; John Paulson for 50th wedding anniversary; Brian Kaufman for surviving skiing conditions; Ann Niewenhuis for Pfizer's $22,000 support for 4-H kids; Lisa Palchick for third grandson; Janice Brown explaining congrats are early - she is superintendant for 1 1/2 more years; Al Heilman for three good things - his Red Rose Award and his two stores sold to two employees; and Stacy Ridenour for son's movie experience with DeNiro. Program: Jane Fette introduced speaker Judge Richard Lamb, who shared great stories and changes in society during his 24 year experience in the court - from jail-crowding issues to the headline grabbers during his service. Fascinating! Monday, January 8, 2007 Pres Drew called the meeting to order. Bob Huiskamp's invocation lauded Gerald Ford for finding truth in selfless ways and choosing the path for the benefit of all and probably causing his election loss. Richard Piet shared the news including Nancy Pelosi's challenge to Bush's troop increase and GM being awarded car and truck of the year. He concluded with a barrage of Ugo jokes. Art news delivered by Kathleen Tosca. Visiting Rotarians: Bob Peterson introduced Dick Weaver - City Planning from Santa Fe Springs, CA. Guests: Brian Kaufman introduced Patrick Socia; Dan Busby introduced Bob Kudee, and Jennifer Lang introduced Phyllis Rappaport and her mother, Sherry Van Conant. Music: John Dillworth and Jerry Albertson led us in "Auld Lang Syne" to catch up and "Winter Wonderland" to remind us it is winter! Announcements: Ed Sackley was thanked for acquiring the microphone used by members today and then promised another. It takes a little traffic management but was soundly applauded. Thell Woods announced a Rotary International grant of $1,500 for club PR, also given to all seven clubs in the district. Andy Latham announced the FAMILY OF ROTARY committee WMU men's basketball event on February 6th. You need to purchase tickets by January 22. Greta Williams, team leader of the Group Study Exchange Program, is recruiting and interviewing team members. Further details on gretaw@aol.com. Pres Drew announced a night Rotary meeting on February 5 and encouraged bringing guests. Happy Bucks: Thell Woods requested info on obtaining the Biosand Water Filters; Mayor Robert Jones contributed as a thank you for the opportunity to serve in Lansing; Keith Roe thanked Thell Woods for Regional Meetings of Rotary Presidents; Roger Storteboom for the mikes and a Goodwill experience; Brian Kaufman for the production of snow and Ed Sackley for return to Kazoo meetings. Program: Bob Kent introduced presenter and Rotarian Jennifer Lang, Executive Director of Colleagues International. She spoke of citizen diplomacy and her seven years of amazing opportunities via her position. She shared her thanks for all the assistance and warm welcome to all the guests she introduces at club meetings. This is a program for professionals from all over the world to share ideas with contemporaries. Colleagues International works with the State Department and Library of Congress providing positive public relations for Uncle Sam. The program has been in operation in Kalamazoo since 1971. Jennifer also gave Gold Stars to Pres Drew for his support of Colleagues International. Once again, we are blessed with an excellent program by one of our own members. Great job, Jennifer!
