Invocation by John Pellowe

Polio Plus update by Gordon Duisterhof - Rotary is doing well overall but there are still cases in India and Nigeria.

Red Rose update by Jean Forest - starting earlier to ask for nominations.  Check the website - last year's recipient was Al Heilman.

Songs:  Appropriate WMU and MSU fight songs.

Happy Bucks:  Rick Briscoe - $10 for other universities; Barbara Walters - going again soon to Casa Umparo; Doug Vernon - free concerts during Lent at First Methodist Church; Tim Kilmartin for Vicksburg Rotary Showboat; Greta Williams - retiring Wednesday for good; Steve Duisterhof for good trip to Haiti; Pat Norris - Ohio State won Big Ten again; Dave Koestner - $5 to Rotary charities for John Dillworth's pleasant pre-meeting music; Gordon Duisterhof for Showboat; Ann Nieuwenhuis - to 4-H scholarships for MSU extension; and Sandra Edwards - $5 for making it back from coooold Minnesota.

Guest speaker:  Diether Haenicke, President of WMU, introduced Dr. Lou Anna Simon, 20th President of Michigan State University.  Described history of the land grant school and its mission to relate it to today's mission - quality + connecting to society.  Partnerships is the key word.  The state universities must work together to be a focus of the life sciences corridor.  They must learn how to sustain themselves with limited $'s.

There will be a physician shortage in the near future - no $'s from the state, so need new model.  Partner with Grand Rapids, blending a community-based center with medical center.  Must meld Michigan's manufacturing economy with the agricultural economy into a "bio-economy" - there is much opportunity in petroleum research.  We can make anything with the bio method but must be economical - but it needs funds on a national level to do this.  We must use new knowledge faster than others in an innovation curve in order to compete.
