President Rex Bell called the meeting and introduced Richard Piet for the news.  Snow Snow and more snow was the order of the day.  Doug Vernon did the invocation and the arts news was presented by Teri Bullard.

This weeks meeting was held and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.  Fellow Rotarian and gracious host, Jim Bridenstine introduced us to the very special showing of Spared from the Storm.

In all the misery of the hurricane that hit New Orleans, there were bright moments.  One of those was the rescue of the holdings of the New Orleans Museum of Art.  So many masterpieces could have been lost had it not been for the dedicated staff of the museum and their rush to move millions and millions of dollars worth of art to levels in the museum to save them from water damage.

National Guard members forcefully removed museum staff from the flooded facility against their wishes.  Staff soon returned to the museum to make sure that generator were installed so that security systems could be armed.  They made sure that humidity levels were not dangerously high to cause damage to paintings and sculptures.  And at the earliest possible moment, art work was moved to safety and plans made to rebuild.  To raise enough money to rebuild, the New Orleans Museum took some of the major pieces on a four city tour.  Kalamazoo was lucky enough to be on that tour.  Art consists of 17th through 20th century works, including paintings by Degas, Monet, Gaugin, a sculpture by Rodin, and many more pieces done by artists you would recognize.  Thank you, Jim.  What a great way to spend a lunch hour.  Tell your friends and neighbors.  This exhibit is well worth the visit and serves a great cause.
